# Messages

The Messages panel provides a full chronological history of all communications between the agency and the requester for this request, and a compose area for sending new messages.

Each message appears as a chat bubble. Your own messages appear in dark teal bubbles; the other party's messages appear in white/light bubbles.

## Sending a message

1. In the **Compose Message** area, type your message. The rich text toolbar supports Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Headings, bullet lists, numbered lists, blockquote, link, and code formatting.
2. Optionally, click **Presets** to insert a pre-configured message template. Templates are configured in Settings: Message Presets.
3. Optionally, click **Attach** to add a file.
4. Optionally, click **Preview** to review the message before sending.
5. Click **Send Message**.

Send Message posts the message to the portal thread and sends an outbound email notification to the requester. When the requester replies, you'll receive a **New requester message** email notification with a preview of their message and a **View conversation** button linking directly to the request.
